SHUBERT THEATER, NEW HAVEN
A 10 week journey through history for the Shubert Theater’s celebration of 100 years.
This project was a collaboration between the Shubert Theater and the New Haven Register.
CENTER STAGE. I have never been. Backstage, still waiting. This project took me through all stages of what it is like to be in business for 100 years. Opening doors in 1941 in downtown New Haven, the Shubert Theater brings together dance and music entertaining the diverse crowd drawn to the stage from near and far. In 2014, this ten-page journey produced single pages summarizing a span of 10 consecutive years for New Haven Register readers to enjoy and hopefully relive some of their memories spent at the theater. For me, it was a new journey every week. Each week showcased a piece of history along with ways readers can participate by donating, joining a family fun day, a summer camp for the kids and the option to purchase commemorative items to support the theater.
The tricky part was fitting all the content on one page. I did my best to keep the type all the same point size and we worked hard on editing the copy to make it fit. The banner needed to be designed as a static element on each page and an ad blocked off the bottom strip. Edits had to happen, photos had to be removed and others shrunk to make the pages visually appealing and consistent.
In the end, we had 10 pages telling the story of the Shubert Theater. A complete package. Pages one through nine kept the reader coming back for another 10 years of theater history.
